The Steam Coast Trail is OPEN!!!!!

Free Press Article

If you’ve walked between Dunster Beach and Blue Anchor recently you would have noticed the first section of the ‘Steam Coast Trail’ being developed at an impressive rate. In fact, it’s been completed ahead of schedule, and will be open to the public over the festive period! To celebrate, please join the Steam Coast Trail team at Dunster Beach at 10am on the 27th December. Everybody is welcome to join us on foot…. or bike, or skates or skateboard or wheelchair! It could be the perfect opportunity to test all those new Christmas toys with wheels!

The first section of the trail is 1.5km long, and just the beginning of a much larger project to build a picturesque network of multi-user paths around West Somerset.

Harry Singer, chairman of the SCT team says: "We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from everyone during the construction. We are hoping to keep the momentum going for future phases, but first... let's celebrate! We want to invite people to join us on 27th December at Dunster Beach - ask us questions, tell us what you think and get some much needed fresh air post-Christmas! There are still a few finishing touches to take place, but we want people to start enjoying the path as soon as possible.”

Although there is an existing right of way for pedestrians, the SCT team are yet to convince the Blue Anchor Chalet Owners Association to extend the trail through their land. Judy Mapledoram, member of the SCT Team says, “There’s plenty more of the path to come, and we’ll revisit the ‘Blue Anchor gap’ in due time. We’re not the kind who give up easily! For now, many local families are already content to enjoy the safe and picturesque cycling from Dunster Beach.”

Graham Boswell, local Ecological consultant and SCT trustee comments, “I’m very glad the trail has been constructed outside nesting season and that contractors have been careful not to disturb the reed beds south of the ramp. The trail is designed to maintain or enhance the biodiversity of the bank and to minimise visual impact. Designers have taken special measures to ensure features are in keeping with the surroundings, including a wooden bridge, and a tarmac that will fade over time. The views are amazing!”

Video walks along the Steam Coast Trail can be found on Facebook at facebook.com/steam- coast-trail. Like the page to show your support and keep up to date with future progress.

The Steam Coast Trail team would like to make an extra-special thanks to Dunster Beach Holidays, West Somerset Railway and Maitland Walker LLP.
